Is Vermiculite Dangerous?
The Hidden Asbestos Risk In Your Insulation
Vermiculite insulation looks harmless, but much of it, especially Zonolite brand insulation, is contaminated with asbestos. Left undisturbed it may be low-risk, but any renovation, drilling, or movement can release fibres you can’t see or smell. Here’s what every Calgary homeowner should know.

Yes, It Can Be, And Testing Is The Only Way To Be Sure
Vermiculite itself is a natural mineral and isn’t harmful. The danger comes from where most of it was mined. From the 1920s to 1990, a mine in Libby, Montana supplied roughly 70% of the world’s vermiculite under the Zonolite name, and that deposit was contaminated with asbestos.
If your home was built or insulated before the mid-1990s, there’s a real chance your attic vermiculite contains asbestos. You cannot tell by looking, and disturbing it is exactly what makes it dangerous. That’s why professional testing and, if needed, certified removal is the safe path.
Why It's A Health Concern
What Makes Asbestos-Contaminated Vermiculite Risky
Airborne Fibres
When vermiculite is disturbed, microscopic asbestos fibres become airborne. They're invisible, odourless, and can stay suspended in the air long enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs.
Serious Illness
Long-term asbestos exposure is linked to asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Symptoms often appear decades later, which is why prevention matters far more than reaction.
Everyday Disturbance
Storing boxes in the attic, running new wiring, adding pot lights, or a simple reno can all disturb vermiculite, releasing fibres into the living space below without anyone noticing.
Don't Take The Risk

Frequently Asked Questions
Is all vermiculite dangerous?
No. Only vermiculite contaminated with asbestos poses a health risk. Because most North American supply came from the contaminated Libby mine, testing is the only reliable way to confirm whether yours is safe.
Is it safe to leave vermiculite alone?
If it’s sealed off and completely undisturbed, the risk is lower. But any renovation, air movement, or contact can release fibres. Most experts recommend testing and, if asbestos is present, professional removal.
Can I remove vermiculite myself?
It’s strongly discouraged. Disturbing asbestos-containing material without proper containment, equipment, and disposal puts you and your household at risk and may breach Alberta regulations. Always use a certified abatement team.
